EMDR Therapy for Anger in Colorado
“I go from zero to a hundred and hate who I become.”
Does this sound familiar?
Snapping at the people you love over small things. Feeling your jaw clench and your chest tighten before you even know why. Replaying an argument for days. Road rage. Slamming doors, then feeling ashamed. Being told you are intimidating when you did not mean to be. Going quiet and cold instead of exploding, then resenting everyone. Anger that shows up as sarcasm, contempt, or shutting down. Feeling like anger is the only emotion that comes easily.
What is anger really telling you?
Anger is a normal, healthy emotion. It signals that a boundary was crossed, a need was not met, or something feels unfair or unsafe. Anger becomes a problem when it arrives faster and bigger than the situation calls for, when it costs you relationships, work, or self-respect, or when it is the only feeling you can reach while hurt, fear, grief, and shame stay buried underneath.
For many adults, chronic anger has roots in adverse life experiences: being screamed at or put down as a child, watching parents fight, bullying, betrayal, or living for years in a situation where anger was the only way to be heard. The nervous system learned that threat is everywhere and that force is the fastest route to safety. Willpower and anger-management tips rarely change that, because the reaction fires before thinking has a chance.
How does EMDR help with anger?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) works on the experiences that taught your nervous system to fire so quickly. Using bilateral stimulation, or stimulation of both brain hemispheres through eye movements, tapping, or vibrations, EMDR reprocesses those memories so they lose their emotional charge. Present-day situations stop matching the old threat, and the gap between trigger and reaction gets wider.
EMDR also targets the beliefs that fuel anger, such as people always take advantage of me, I have to defend myself, or I am not respected, and strengthens the beliefs you want to hold instead. Along the way you learn grounding and regulation skills so you have something to reach for in the moment.
At EMDR Center of Denver, we combine EMDR with additional evidence-based talk therapy depending on your goals. Many clients find that as the underlying experiences resolve, anger becomes information they can use rather than a force that runs them.
