Not feeling emotionally and/or physically safe to exist in the spaces you sometimes occupy due to who you love or how you identify. Growing up with the unspoken conditioning to conform to the straight, cisgendered (identifying with one’s assigned gender at birth) world around you despite a nagging sense you are compromising parts of who you truly are. Constant scanning and assessment of whether a person or space is safe for you to exist or flourish as yourself. Coded speech or behavior until assessing a person or space as not an active threat or risk to emotional or bodily harm if you were to be fully present as yourself.
The EMDR Center of Denver provides identity-affirming therapy and counseling services for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Gender Variant, Queer and Questioning adults and the families of LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Owned and operated by a queer couple, EMDR Center of Denver is deeply dedicated to supporting members of the LGBTQIA+ community and providing LGBTQIA-affirming therapy throughout Colorado–for folks living in Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, Pueblo, Greeley and beyond—so that all sexual minorities may flourish and thrive.
For folks who are exploring or unsure regarding their sexual orientation and/or gender identity, therapy at the EMDR Center of Denver can be an incredibly supportive and empowering experience. We use a collaborative approach to therapy to help individuals more fully embrace who they are in a way that feels self-paced, safe, and affirming. Through therapy, you can work towards greater self-acceptance, self-love, and self-discovery.
We also offer support for gender-variant folks and their families. Transgender and gender non-binary identified-individuals experience unique challenges. Gender-affirming therapy through the EMDR Center of Denver can provide a supportive and empowering space for growth.
EMDR Center of Denver also works with families in providing individual therapy to build greater awareness and understanding regarding a loved one’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity in the “coming out” process that non-queer family member’s also navigate in supporting and communicating about their LGBTQIA+ loved ones.
Based on extensive peer-reviewed research, EMDR generally works more quickly and comprehensively in addressing negative effects of adverse or traumatic life events than any other current known talk therapy treatment for adults. EMDR rewires neural brain circuits through bilateral stimulation, or stimulation of both brain spheres through eye movements, vibrations, or tapping, to bring relief from painful conditioning or adverse life experiences to better identify and create the life you want.
The EMDR process involves identifying the specific positive ways you want to see yourself and more fully be present in the spaces and relationships you inhabit. EMDR then reinforces these desired positive beliefs through your brain’s biological neural network.
At the EMDR Center of Denver, we are here to create a safe space for every LGBTQIA+ person to more fully create the life you want through compassionate, individualized care. In the words of Audre Lorde, ‘If I didn’t define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people’s fantasies for me and eaten alive.’ In our work together, we will help you more fully create the life you want by ‘defining yourself for yourself’–sifting through all the voices around you so that you may more fully identify and honor your own. This process remains the task and the gift of a lifetime.
